Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

And they said, "Some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets."

In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea,

King Herod heard of it, for Jesus'[2] name had become known. Some[3] said, "John the Baptist[4] has been raised from the dead. That is why these miraculous powers are at work in him."

And they told him, "John the Baptist; and others say, Elijah; and others, one of the prophets."

Now Herod the tetrarch heard about all that was happening, and he was perplexed, because it was said by some that John had been raised from the dead,

And many came to him. And they said, "John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true."
