So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged[1] Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.

but they kept shouting, "Crucify, crucify him!"

Then Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowds, "I find no guilt in this man."

And we indeed justly, for we are receiving the due reward of our deeds; but this man has done nothing wrong."

Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, "Certainly this man was innocent!"

Pilate said to him, "What is truth?"After he had said this, he went back outside to the Jews and told them, "I find no guilt in him.

When the chief priests and the officers saw him, they cried out, "Crucify him, crucify him!" Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him."

And though they found in him no guilt worthy of death, they asked Pilate to have him executed.

But when they recognized that he was a Jew, for about two hours they all cried out with one voice, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

For it was indeed fitting that we should have such a high priest, holy, innocent, unstained, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens.

but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
