And he began to speak to them in parables. "A man planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a pit for the winepress and built a tower, and leased it to tenants and went into another country.

It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants[2] in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake.

And he was teaching them many things in parables, and in his teaching he said to them:

"For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants[3] and entrusted to them his property.

This is the one who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the angel who spoke to him at Mount Sinai, and with our fathers. He received living oracles to give to us.

He said therefore, "A nobleman went into a far country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return.

Not many days later, the younger son gathered all he had and took a journey into a far country, and there he squandered his property in reckless living.

he said, "To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that 'seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.'

"What do you think? A man had two sons. And he went to the first and said, 'Son, go and work in the vineyard today.'

Then I said, "Ah, Lord GOD! They are saying of me, 'Is he not a maker of parables?' "

Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?

In that day every place where there used to be a thousand vines, worth a thousand shekels[10] of silver, will become briers and thorns.

They said to him, "Where will you have us prepare it?"

And he told them many things in parables, saying: "A sower went out to sow.

"Hear another parable. There was a master of a house who planted a vineyard and put a fence around it and dug a winepress in it and built a tower and leased it to tenants, and went into another country.

When the season for fruit drew near, he sent his servants[3] to the tenants to get his fruit.

And he called them to him and said to them in parables, "How can Satan cast out Satan?

So they answered Jesus, "We do not know." And Jesus said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things."
