The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me to bring good news to the poor;[1] he has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to those who are bound;[2]

the blind receive their sight and the lame walk, lepers[1] are cleansed and the deaf hear, and the dead are raised up, and the poor have good news preached to them.

He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son,

the people dwelling in darkness have seen a great light, and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death, on them a light has dawned."

Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed, and the ears of those who hear will give attention.

He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.

Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped;

"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God.

But for you who fear my name, the sun of righteousness shall rise with healing in its wings. You shall go out leaping like calves from the stall.

Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him?

For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.

"And as for me, this is my covenant with them," says the LORD: "My Spirit that is upon you, and my words that I have put in your mouth, shall not depart out of your mouth, or out of the mouth of your offspring, or out of the mouth of your children's offspring," says the LORD, "from this time forth and forevermore."

The Lord GOD has given me the tongue of those who are taught, that I may know how to sustain with a word him who is weary. Morning by morning he awakens; he awakens my ear to hear as those who are taught.

to hear the groans of the prisoners, to set free those who were doomed to die,

"Seventy weeks are decreed about your people and your holy city, to finish the transgression, to put an end to sin, and to atone for iniquity, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal both vision and prophet, and to anoint a most holy place.[3]

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: "I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

saying to the prisoners, 'Come out,' to those who are in darkness, 'Appear.' They shall feed along the ways; on all bare heights shall be their pasture;

I have stirred him up in righteousness, and I will make all his ways level; he shall build my city and set my exiles free, not for price or reward," says the LORD of hosts.

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

"As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill."

But I will leave in your midst a people humble and lowly. They shall seek refuge in the name of the LORD,

The kings of the earth set themselves, and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his anointed, saying,

He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, "We have found the Messiah" (which means Christ).

a bruised reed he will not break, and a smoldering wick he will not quench, until he brings justice to victory;

The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.

for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,

you have loved righteousness and hated wickedness. Therefore God, your God, has anointed you with the oil of gladness beyond your companions;

because your heart was tender and you humbled yourself before God when you heard his words against this place and its inhabitants, and you have humbled yourself before me and have torn your clothes and wept before me, I also have heard you, declares the LORD.
