One Sabbath, when he went to dine at the house of a ruler of the Pharisees, they were watching him carefully.

And they watched Jesus,[1] to see whether he would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse him.

So they watched him and sent spies, who pretended to be sincere, that they might catch him in something he said, so as to deliver him up to the authority and jurisdiction of the governor.

While Jesus[5] was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table.

They only plan to thrust him down from his high position. They take pleasure in falsehood. They bless with their mouths, but inwardly they curse. Selah

And when one comes to see me, he utters empty words, while his heart gathers iniquity; when he goes out, he tells it abroad.

And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him.

for he is like one who is inwardly calculating.[3] "Eat and drink!" he says to you, but his heart is not with you.

The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death.

Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

But a Pharisee in the council named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, stood up and gave orders to put the men outside for a little while.

Of how much more value is a man than a sheep! So it is lawful to do good on the Sabbath."

And behold, there was a man before him who had dropsy.

Being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God would come, he answered them, "The kingdom of God is not coming with signs to be observed,
