He has walled up my way, so that I cannot pass, and he has set darkness upon my paths.

Why is light given to a man whose way is hidden, whom God has hedged in?

You have caused my companions to shun me; you have made me a horror[2] to them. I am shut in so that I cannot escape;

my eye grows dim through sorrow. Every day I call upon you, O LORD; I spread out my hands to you.

So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the court of the guard, letting Jeremiah down by ropes. And there was no water in the cistern, but only mud, and Jeremiah sank in the mud.

Now, behold, I release you today from the chains on your hands. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you well, but if it seems wrong to you to come with me to Babylon, do not come. See, the whole land is before you; go wherever you think it good and right to go.

Our pursuers are at our necks;[1] we are weary; we are given no rest.

He has confirmed his words, which he spoke against us and against our rulers who ruled us,[1] by bringing upon us a great calamity. For under the whole heaven there has not been done anything like what has been done against Jerusalem.

Therefore I will hedge up her[4] way with thorns, and I will build a wall against her, so that she cannot find her paths.
