Men have gaped at me with their mouth; they have struck me insolently on the cheek; they mass themselves together against me.

They abhor me; they keep aloof from me; they do not hesitate to spit at the sight of me.

Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us, for we have had more than enough of contempt.

Reproaches have broken my heart, so that I am in despair. I looked for pity, but there was none, and for comforters, but I found none.

For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me.

I gave my back to those who strike, and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard; I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

[1] Now muster your troops, O daughter[2] of troops; siege is laid against us; with a rod they strike the judge of Israel on the cheek.

Then they spit in his face and struck him. And some slapped him,

But I say to you, Do not resist the one who is evil. But if anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.

To one who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also, and from one who takes away your cloak do not withhold your tunic[2] either.

For you bear it if someone makes slaves of you, or devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or strikes you in the face.
