Now a certain man was ill, Lazarus of Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha.
The crowd that had been with him when he called Lazarus out of the tomb and raised him from the dead continued to bear witness.
When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus[4] was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead.
After saying these things, he said to them, "Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep, but I go to awaken him."
And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.
In those days she became ill and died, and when they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room.
So the sisters sent to him, saying, "Lord, he whom you love is ill."
Now when they drew near to Jerusalem, to Bethphage and Bethany, at the Mount of Olives, Jesus[1] sent two of his disciples
After this, Joseph was told, "Behold, your father is ill." So he took with him his two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim.
Bethany was near Jerusalem, about two miles[3] off,
and many of the Jews had come to Martha and Mary to console them concerning their brother.
