Shall the axe boast over him who hews with it, or the saw magnify itself against him who wields it? As if a rod should wield him who lifts it, or as if a staff should lift him who is not wood!

Ah, Assyria, the rod of my anger; the staff in their hands is my fury!

They come from a distant land, from the end of the heavens, the LORD and the weapons of his indignation, to destroy the whole land.[2]

" 'Have you not heard that I determined it long ago? I planned from days of old what now I bring to pass, that you should make fortified cities crash into heaps of ruins,

Thus says the LORD to his anointed, to Cyrus, whose right hand I have grasped, to subdue nations before him and to loose the belts of kings, to open doors before him that gates may not be closed:

Be broken,[3] you peoples, and be shattered;[4] give ear, all you far countries; strap on your armor and be shattered; strap on your armor and be shattered.

This whole land shall become a ruin and a waste, and these nations shall serve the king of Babylon seventy years.

behold, I will send for all the tribes of the north, declares the LORD, and for Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and I will bring them against this land and its inhabitants, and against all these surrounding nations. I will devote them to destruction, and make them a horror, a hissing, and an everlasting desolation.

How the hammer of the whole earth is cut down and broken! How Babylon has become a horror among the nations!

So the sword is given to be polished, that it may be grasped in the hand. It is sharpened and polished to be given into the hand of the slayer.

And I will pour out my indignation upon you; I will blow upon you with the fire of my wrath, and I will deliver you into the hands of brutish men, skillful to destroy.

But they do not know the thoughts of the LORD; they do not understand his plan, that he has gathered them as sheaves to the threshing floor.

Arise and thresh, O daughter of Zion, for I will make your horn iron, and I will make your hoofs bronze; you shall beat in pieces many peoples; and shall devote[3] their gain to the LORD, their wealth to the Lord of the whole earth.

The scatterer has come up against you. Man the ramparts; watch the road; dress for battle;[1] collect all your strength.

From him shall come the cornerstone, from him the tent peg, from him the battle bow, from him every ruler -- all of them together.

The king was angry, and he sent his troops and destroyed those murderers and burned their city.
