Even the stork in the heavens knows her times, and the turtledove, swallow, and crane[1] keep the time of their coming, but my people know not the rules of the LORD.

They bend their tongue like a bow; falsehood and not truth has grown strong[3] in the land; for they proceed from evil to evil, and they do not know me, declares the LORD.

And he said to me, "Son of man, these are the men who devise iniquity and who give wicked counsel in this city;

"Hear this word, you cows of Bashan, who are on the mountain of Samaria, who oppress the poor, who crush the needy, who say to your husbands, 'Bring, that we may drink!'

"Woe to those who are at ease in Zion, and to those who feel secure on the mountain of Samaria, the notable men of the first of the nations, to whom the house of Israel comes!

Its heads give judgment for a bribe; its priests teach for a price; its prophets practice divination for money; yet they lean on the LORD and say, "Is not the LORD in the midst of us? No disaster shall come upon us."

For the lips of a priest should guard knowledge, and people[4] should seek instruction from his mouth, for he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.

Jesus, looking at him with sadness, said, "How difficult it is for those who have wealth to enter the kingdom of God!

But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, 'We do not want this man to reign over us.'
