For Zedekiah king of Judah had imprisoned him, saying, "Why do you prophesy and say, 'Thus says the LORD: Behold, I am giving this city into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he shall capture it;

But the king of Egypt said to them, "Moses and Aaron, why do you take the people away from their work? Get back to your burdens."

In vain have I struck your children; they took no correction; your own sword devoured your prophets like a ravening lion.

Now Jeremiah was still going in and out among the people, for he had not yet been put in prison.

But if you do not surrender to the officials of the king of Babylon, then this city shall be given into the hand of the Chaldeans, and they shall burn it with fire, and you shall not escape from their hand."

Thus says the LORD: This city shall surely be given into the hand of the army of the king of Babylon and be taken."

Then the officials said to the king, "Let this man be put to death, for he is weakening the hands of the soldiers who are left in this city, and the hands of all the people, by speaking such words to them. For this man is not seeking the welfare of this people, but their harm."

Ebed-melech went from the king's house and said to the king,

O LORD, do not your eyes look for truth? You have struck them down, but they felt no anguish; you have consumed them, but they refused to take correction. They have made their faces harder than rock; they have refused to repent.

"My transgressions were bound[5] into a yoke; by his hand they were fastened together; they were set upon my neck; he caused my strength to fail; the Lord gave me into the hands of those whom I cannot withstand.

but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom."

and said to him, "Tell us by what authority you do these things, or who it is that gave you this authority."
