Jeremiah 22:5

But if you will not obey these words, I swear by myself, declares the LORD, that this house shall become a desolation.

and said, "By myself I have sworn, declares the LORD, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son,

"But if you[2] turn aside and forsake my statutes and my commandments that I have set before you, and go and serve other gods and worship them,

And at this house, which was exalted, everyone passing by will be astonished and say, 'Why has the LORD done thus to this land and to this house?'

Then they will say, 'Because they abandoned the LORD, the God of their fathers who brought them out of the land of Egypt and laid hold on other gods and worshiped them and served them. Therefore he has brought all this disaster on them.' "

Therefore I swore in my wrath, "They shall not enter my rest."

but if you refuse and rebel, you shall be eaten by the sword; for the mouth of the LORD has spoken."

"I have forsaken my house; I have abandoned my heritage; I have given the beloved of my soul into the hands of her enemies.

But if you do not listen to me, to keep the Sabbath day holy, and not to bear a burden and enter by the gates of Jerusalem on the Sabbath day, then I will kindle a fire in its gates, and it shall devour the palaces of Jerusalem and shall not be quenched.' "

You shall say to them, 'Thus says the LORD: If you will not listen to me, to walk in my law that I have set before you,

The Chaldeans burned the king's house and the house of the people, and broke down the walls of Jerusalem.

Therefore hear the word of the LORD, all you of Judah who dwell in the land of Egypt: Behold, I have sworn by my great name, says the LORD, that my name shall no more be invoked by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, 'As the Lord GOD lives.'

The Lord GOD has sworn by himself, declares the LORD, the God of hosts: "I abhor the pride of Jacob and hate his strongholds, and I will deliver up the city and all that is in it."

Therefore because of you Zion shall be plowed as a field; Jerusalem shall become a heap of ruins, and the mountain of the house a wooded height.

See, your house is left to you desolate.

And to whom did he swear that they would not enter his rest, but to those who were disobedient?

For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself,

So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath,
