You are wearied with your many counsels; let them stand forth and save you, those who divide the heavens, who gaze at the stars, who at the new moons make known what shall come upon you.

who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish,

Such to you are those with whom you have labored, who have done business with you from your youth; they wander about each in his own direction; there is no one to save you.

These two things shall come to you in a moment, in one day; the loss of children and widowhood shall come upon you in full measure, in spite of your many sorceries and the great power of your enchantments.

You were wearied with the length of your way, but you did not say, "It is hopeless"; you found new life for your strength, and so you were not faint.[3]

and say, 'Thus shall Babylon sink, to rise no more, because of the disaster that I am bringing upon her, and they shall become exhausted.' "Thus far are the words of Jeremiah.

She has wearied herself with toil;[4] its abundant corrosion does not go out of it. Into the fire with its corrosion!

That very night Belshazzar the Chaldean king was killed.

Behold, is it not from the LORD of hosts that peoples labor merely for fire, and nations weary themselves for nothing?
