Therefore shall the protection of Pharaoh turn to your shame, and the shelter in the shadow of Egypt to your humiliation.

Behold, you are trusting now in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

Oh grant us help against the foe, for vain is the salvation of man!

Trusting in a treacherous man in time of trouble is like a bad tooth or a foot that slips.

Then they shall be dismayed and ashamed because of Cush their hope and of Egypt their boast.

And the inhabitants of this coastland will say in that day, 'Behold, this is what has happened to those in whom we hoped and to whom we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria! And we, how shall we escape?' "

Behold, you are trusting in Egypt, that broken reed of a staff, which will pierce the hand of any man who leans on it. Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him.

How much you go about, changing your way! You shall be put to shame by Egypt as you were put to shame by Assyria.

"For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: As my anger and my wrath were poured out on the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so my wrath will be poured out on you when you go to Egypt. You shall become an execration, a horror, a curse, and a taunt. You shall see this place no more.

Now therefore know for a certainty that you shall die by the sword, by famine, and by pestilence in the place where you desire to go to live."

The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, said: "Behold, I am bringing punishment upon Amon of Thebes, and Pharaoh and Egypt and her gods and her kings, upon Pharaoh and those who trust in him.

when they grasped you with the hand, you broke and tore all their shoulders; and when they leaned on you, you broke and made all their loins to shake.[2]

The thing itself shall be carried to Assyria as tribute to the great king.[4] Ephraim shall be put to shame, and Israel shall be ashamed of his idol.[5]

For the Scripture says, "Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame."

and hope does not put us to shame, because God's love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
