The earth lies defiled under its inhabitants; for they have transgressed the laws, violated the statutes, broken the everlasting covenant.

For does not my house stand so with God? For he has made with me an everlasting covenant, ordered in all things and secure. For will he not cause to prosper all my help and my desire?

therefore thus says the LORD, the God of Israel: Behold, I am bringing upon Jerusalem and Judah such disaster[2] that the ears of everyone who hears of it will tingle.

Manasseh led Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem astray, to do more evil than the nations whom the LORD destroyed before the people of Israel.

which he confirmed to Jacob as a statute, to Israel as an everlasting covenant,

Fear and trembling come upon me, and horror overwhelms me.

Against a godless nation I send him, and against the people of my wrath I command him, to take spoil and seize plunder, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

The highways lie waste; the traveler ceases. Covenants are broken; cities[2] are despised; there is no regard for man.

Thus says the LORD: "Where is your mother's certificate of divorce, with which I sent her away? Or which of my creditors is it to whom I have sold you? Behold, for your iniquities you were sold, and for your transgressions your mother was sent away.

Therefore the Lord does not rejoice over their young men, and has no compassion on their fatherless and widows; for everyone is godless and an evildoer, and every mouth speaks folly.[6] For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.

They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers, who refused to hear my words. They have gone after other gods to serve them. The house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken my covenant that I made with their fathers.

They shall ask the way to Zion, with faces turned toward it, saying, 'Come, let us join ourselves to the LORD in an everlasting covenant that will never be forgotten.'

"For thus says the Lord GOD: I will deal with you as you have done, you who have despised the oath in breaking the covenant,

But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned."Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make a full end of them.

because they had not obeyed my rules, but had rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were set on their fathers' idols.

I will make a covenant of peace with them. It shall be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will set them in their land[7] and multiply them, and will set my sanctuary in their midst forevermore.

He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time.

and have not obeyed the voice of the LORD our God by walking in his laws, which he set before us by his servants the prophets.

we have sinned and done wrong and acted wickedly and rebelled, turning aside from your commandments and rules.

But like Adam they transgressed the covenant; there they dealt faithlessly with me.

"You shall therefore keep all my statutes and all my rules and do them, that the land where I am bringing you to live may not vomit you out.

As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, the rest that it did not have on your Sabbaths when you were dwelling in it.

Arise and go, for this is no place to rest, because of uncleanness that destroys with a grievous destruction.

And they were both righteous before God, walking blamelessly in all the commandments and statutes of the Lord.

Now even the first covenant had regulations for worship and an earthly place of holiness.

if you transgress the covenant of the LORD your God, which he commanded you, and go and serve other gods and bow down to them. Then the anger of the LORD will be kindled against you, and you shall perish quickly from off the good land that he has given to you."

So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and put in place statutes and rules for them at Shechem.
