There is an outcry in the streets for lack of wine; all joy has grown dark; the gladness of the earth is banished.

may our cattle be heavy with young, suffering no mishap or failure in bearing;[2] may there be no cry of distress in our streets!

Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, and wine to those in bitter distress;[2]

They do not cry to me from the heart, but they wail upon their beds; for grain and wine they gash themselves; they rebel against me.

The vine dries up; the fig tree languishes. Pomegranate, palm, and apple, all the trees of the field are dried up, and gladness dries up from the children of man.

Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, and as destruction from the Almighty[3] it comes.

But Abraham said, 'Child, remember that you in your lifetime received your good things, and Lazarus in like manner bad things; but now he is comforted here, and you are in anguish.
