We have heard of the pride of Moab -- how proud he is! -- of his arrogance, his pride, and his insolence; in his idle boasting he is not right.

"Scoffer" is the name of the arrogant, haughty man who acts with arrogant pride.

An oracle concerning Moab. Because Ar of Moab is laid waste in a night, Moab is undone; because Kir of Moab is laid waste in a night, Moab is undone.

The haughty looks of man shall be brought low, and the lofty pride of men shall be humbled, and the LORD alone will be exalted in that day.

For the hand of the LORD will rest on this mountain, and Moab shall be trampled down in his place, as straw is trampled down in a dunghill.[1]

And he will spread out his hands in the midst of it as a swimmer spreads his hands out to swim, but the LORD will lay low his pompous pride together with the skill[2] of his hands.

Because you have said, "We have made a covenant with death, and with Sheol we have an agreement, when the overwhelming whip passes through it will not come to us, for we have made lies our refuge, and in falsehood we have taken shelter";

Then your covenant with death will be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol will not stand; when the overwhelming scourge passes through, you will be beaten down by it.

who frustrates the signs of liars and makes fools of diviners, who turns wise men back and makes their knowledge foolish,

"How do you say, 'We are heroes and mighty men of war'?

"Make him drunk, because he magnified himself against the LORD, so that Moab shall wallow in his vomit, and he too shall be held in derision.

Moab shall be destroyed and be no longer a people, because he magnified himself against the LORD.

A sword against the diviners, that they may become fools! A sword against her warriors, that they may be destroyed!

Thus says the LORD: "For three transgressions of Moab, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment,[1] because he burned to lime the bones of the king of Edom.

Likewise, you who are younger, be subject to the elders. Clothe yourselves, all of you, with humility toward one another, for "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble."
