And Jeroboam appointed a feast on the fifteenth day of the eighth month like the feast that was in Judah, and he offered sacrifices on the altar. So he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves that he made. And he placed in Bethel the priests of the high places that he had made.

For thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel: Behold, I will silence in this place, before your eyes and in your days, the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride.

Moreover, I will banish from them the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, the grinding of the millstones and the light of the lamp.

And I will silence in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem the voice of mirth and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, for the land shall become a waste.

And I will stop the music of your songs, and the sound of your lyres shall be heard no more.

For the children of Israel shall dwell many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or pillar, without ephod or household gods.

They have dealt faithlessly with the LORD; for they have borne alien children. Now the new moon shall devour them with their fields.

And your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land shall not yield its increase, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit.

"I hate, I despise your feasts, and I take no delight in your solemn assemblies.

The songs of the temple[2] shall become wailings[3] in that day," declares the Lord GOD. "So many dead bodies!" "They are thrown everywhere!" "Silence!"

saying, "When will the new moon be over, that we may sell grain? And the Sabbath, that we may offer wheat for sale, that we may make the ephah small and the shekel[4] great and deal deceitfully with false balances,

For they are like entangled thorns, like drunkards as they drink; they are consumed like stubble fully dried.
