You have sown much, and harvested little. You eat, but you never have enough; you drink, but you never have your fill. You clothe yourselves, but no one is warm. And he who earns wages does so to put them into a bag with holes.

Now there was a famine in the days of David for three years, year after year. And David sought the face of the LORD. And the LORD said, "There is bloodguilt on Saul and on his house, because he put the Gibeonites to death."

And she said, "As the LORD your God lives, I have nothing baked, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little oil in a jug. And now I am gathering a couple of sticks that I may go in and prepare it for myself and my son, that we may eat it and die."

For there were those who said, "With our sons and our daughters, we are many. So let us get grain, that we may eat and keep alive."

In the fullness of his sufficiency he will be in distress; the hand of everyone in misery will come against him.

The possessions of his house will be carried away, dragged off in the day of God's[2] wrath.

a fruitful land into a salty waste, because of the evil of its inhabitants.

One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.

For ten acres[4] of vineyard shall yield but one bath, and a homer of seed shall yield but an ephah."[5]

They have sown wheat and have reaped thorns; they have tired themselves out but profit nothing. They shall be ashamed of their[1] harvests because of the fierce anger of the LORD."

Because of the ground that is dismayed, since there is no rain on the land, the farmers are ashamed; they cover their heads.

But since we left off making offerings to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine."

They shall eat, but not be satisfied; they shall play the whore, but not multiply, because they have forsaken the LORD to cherish

For they sow the wind, and they shall reap the whirlwind. The standing grain has no heads; it shall yield no flour; if it were to yield, strangers would devour it.

And your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land shall not yield its increase, and the trees of the land shall not yield their fruit.

When I break your supply[2] of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in a single oven and shall dole out your bread again by weight, and you shall eat and not be satisfied.

Therefore the heavens above you have withheld the dew, and the earth has withheld its produce.

Now, therefore, thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.

"Thus says the LORD of hosts: Consider your ways.

You looked for much, and behold, it came to little. And when you brought it home, I blew it away. Why? declares the LORD of hosts. Because of my house that lies in ruins, while each of you busies himself with his own house.

how did you fare?[2] When one came to a heap of twenty measures, there were but ten. When one came to the wine vat to draw fifty measures, there were but twenty.

I struck you and all the products of your toil with blight and with mildew and with hail, yet you did not turn to me, declares the LORD.

I will send it out, declares the LORD of hosts, and it shall enter the house of the thief, and the house of him who swears falsely by my name. And it shall remain in his house and consume it, both timber and stones."

For before those days there was no wage for man or any wage for beast, neither was there any safety from the foe for him who went out or came in, for I set every man against his neighbor.

If you will not listen, if you will not take it to heart to give honor to my name, says the LORD of hosts, then I will send the curse upon you and I will curse your blessings. Indeed, I have already cursed them, because you do not lay it to heart.

Cursed shall be your basket and your kneading bowl.
