O LORD, how long shall the wicked, how long shall the wicked exult?

Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.

For he says: "By the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I have understanding; I remove the boundaries of peoples, and plunder their treasures; like a bull I bring down those who sit on thrones.

Woe to those who join house to house, who add field to field, until there is no more room, and you are made to dwell alone in the midst of the land.

Because of them this curse shall be used by all the exiles from Judah in Babylon: "The LORD make you like Zedekiah and Ahab, whom the king of Babylon roasted in the fire,"

Because of the wrath of the LORD she shall not be inhabited but shall be an utter desolation; everyone who passes by Babylon shall be appalled, and hiss because of all her wounds.

He brings all of them up with a hook; he drags them out with his net; he gathers them in his dragnet; so he rejoices and is glad.

"Woe to him who builds a town with blood and founds a city on iniquity!

Behold, is it not from the LORD of hosts that peoples labor merely for fire, and nations weary themselves for nothing?
