They saw him from afar, and before he came near to them they conspired against him to kill him.

And they took him and cast him into a pit. The pit was empty; there was no water in it.

Then Midianite traders passed by. And they drew Joseph up and lifted him out of the pit, and sold him to the Ishmaelites for twenty shekels[3] of silver. They took Joseph to Egypt.

But when his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers, they hated him and could not speak peacefully to him.

I was pushed hard,[1] so that I was falling, but the LORD helped me.

who whet their tongues like swords, who aim bitter words like arrows,

I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world."

strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God.
