Genesis 30:1

When Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, she envied her sister. She said to Jacob, "Give me children, or I shall die!"

When the LORD saw that Leah was hated, he opened her womb, but Rachel was barren.

And his brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the saying in mind.

But he himself went a day's journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, "It is enough; now, O LORD, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers."

Who is there who will contend with me? For then I would be silent and die.

"Why did I not die at birth, come out from the womb and expire?

Surely vexation kills the fool, and jealousy slays the simple.

When men in the camp were jealous of Moses and Aaron, the holy one of the LORD,

A tranquil[6] heart gives life to the flesh, but envy[7] makes the bones rot.

But Moses said to him, "Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the LORD's people were prophets, that the LORD would put his Spirit on them!"

he left Judea and departed again for Galilee.

for you are still of the flesh. For while there is jealousy and strife among you, are you not of the flesh and behaving only in a human way?

For godly grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.

envy,[4] drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

For we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, led astray, slaves to various passions and pleasures, passing our days in malice and envy, hated by others and hating one another.

But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth.

Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, "He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to dwell in us"?

She was deeply distressed and prayed to the LORD and wept bitterly.
