Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew, who was living by the oaks[1] of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol and of Aner. These were allies of Abram.

Now therefore swear to me here by God that you will not deal falsely with me or with my descendants or with my posterity, but as I have dealt kindly with you, so you will deal with me and with the land where you have sojourned."

When Abraham reproved Abimelech about a well of water that Abimelech's servants had seized,

And he said, "Swear to me"; and he swore to him. Then Israel bowed himself upon the head of his bed.[2]

If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all.

For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation.
