And after all that has come upon us for our evil deeds and for our great guilt, seeing that you, our God, have punished us less than our iniquities deserved and have given us such a remnant as this,

Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster[1] on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath."

He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities.

The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases;[2] his mercies never come to an end;

O LORD, I have heard the report of you, and your work, O LORD, do I fear. In the midst of the years revive it; in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy.

Did you suffer[2] so many things in vain -- if indeed it was in vain?
