Then the LORD sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf, the one that Aaron made.
But the LORD afflicted Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai, Abram's wife.
So I said to them, 'Let any who have gold take it off.' So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf."
And when Moses saw that the people had broken loose (for Aaron had let them break loose, to the derision of their enemies),
And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And that day about three thousand men of the people fell.
And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden[1] calf. And they said, "These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!"
Nevertheless, those who died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
(Now this man bought a field with the reward of his wickedness, and falling headlong[4] he burst open in the middle and all his bowels gushed out.
And they made a calf in those days, and offered a sacrifice to the idol and were rejoicing in the works of their hands.
