Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph[1] had made the sons of Israel solemnly swear, saying, "God will surely visit you, and you shall carry up my bones with you from here."

Then Israel said to Joseph, "Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you and will bring you again to the land of your fathers.

And the people believed; and when they heard that the LORD had visited the people of Israel and that he had seen their affliction, they bowed their heads and worshiped.

And her neighbors and relatives heard that the Lord had shown great mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.

Fear seized them all, and they glorified God, saying, "A great prophet has arisen among us!" and "God has visited his people!"

And Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, he and our fathers,

and they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham had bought for a sum of silver from the sons of Hamor in Shechem.

By faith Joseph, at the end of his life, made mention of the exodus of the Israelites and gave directions concerning his bones.

As for the bones of Joseph, which the people of Israel brought up from Egypt, they buried them at Shechem, in the piece of land that Jacob bought from the sons of Hamor the father of Shechem for a hundred pieces of money.[1] It became an inheritance of the descendants of Joseph.
