"But Jeshurun grew fat, and kicked; you grew fat, stout, and sleek; then he forsook God who made him and scoffed at the Rock of his salvation.

"The LORD lives, and blessed be my rock, and exalted be my God, the rock of my salvation,

But they broke faith with the God of their fathers, and whored after the gods of the peoples of the land, whom God had destroyed before them.

When the rule of Rehoboam was established and he was strong, he abandoned the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

But when he was strong, he grew proud, to his destruction. For he was unfaithful to the LORD his God and entered the temple of the LORD to burn incense on the altar of incense.

And they captured fortified cities and a rich land, and took possession of houses full of all good things, cisterns already hewn, vineyards, olive orchards and fruit trees in abundance. So they ate and were filled and became fat and delighted themselves in your great goodness.

Their eyes swell out through fatness; their hearts overflow with follies.

"But my people did not listen to my voice; Israel would not submit to me.

He shall cry to me, 'You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.'

And I will make him the firstborn, the highest of the kings of the earth.

Oh come, let us sing to the LORD; let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation!

Ah, sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, offspring of evildoers, children who deal corruptly! They have forsaken the LORD, they have despised the Holy One of Israel, they are utterly estranged.

But now thus says the LORD, he who created you, O Jacob, he who formed you, O Israel: "Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine.

Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen.

Make the heart of this people dull,[5] and their ears heavy, and blind their eyes; lest they see with their eyes, and hear with their ears, and understand with their hearts, and turn and be healed."

And you, O generation, behold the word of the LORD. Have I been a wilderness to Israel, or a land of thick darkness? Why then do my people say, 'We are free, we will come no more to you'?

Can a virgin forget her ornaments, or a bride her attire? Yet my people have forgotten me days without number.

Thus says the LORD: "What wrong did your fathers find in me that they went far from me, and went after worthlessness, and became worthless?

they have grown fat and sleek. They know no bounds in deeds of evil; they judge not with justice the cause of the fatherless, to make it prosper, and they do not defend the rights of the needy.

"How can I pardon you? Your children have forsaken me and have sworn by those who are no gods. When I fed them to the full, they committed adultery and trooped to the houses of whores.

that I may lay hold of the hearts of the house of Israel, who are all estranged from me through their idols.

but when they had grazed,[1] they became full, they were filled, and their heart was lifted up; therefore they forgot me.

The more they increased, the more they sinned against me; I will change their glory into shame.

For this people's heart has grown dull, and with their ears they can barely hear, and their eyes they have closed; lest they should see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their heart and turn, and I would heal them.'

And he said, "Who are you, Lord?" And he said, "I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.

And the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, you are about to lie down with your fathers. Then this people will rise and whore after the foreign gods among them in the land that they are entering, and they will forsake me and break my covenant that I have made with them.

For when I have brought them into the land flowing with milk and honey, which I swore to give to their fathers, and they have eaten and are full and grown fat, they will turn to other gods and serve them, and despise me and break my covenant.

"The Rock, his work is perfect, for all his ways are justice. A God of faithfulness and without iniquity, just and upright is he.

Do you thus repay the LORD, you foolish and senseless people? Is not he your father, who created you, who made you and established you?

"There is none like God, O Jeshurun, who rides through the heavens to your help, through the skies in his majesty.

Thus the LORD became king in Jeshurun, when the heads of the people were gathered, all the tribes of Israel together.

The people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines. And they forsook the LORD and did not serve him.

Why then do you scorn[2] my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded, and honor your sons above me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offering of my people Israel?'
