Jeremiah also uttered a lament for Josiah; and all the singing men and singing women have spoken of Josiah in their laments to this day. They made these a rule in Israel; behold, they are written in the Laments.

For a cry has gone around the land of Moab; her wailing reaches to Eglaim; her wailing reaches to Beer-elim.

In that day the Lord GOD of hosts called for weeping and mourning, for baldness and wearing sackcloth;

"Thus says the LORD: We have heard a cry of panic, of terror, and no peace.

For I heard a cry as of a woman in labor, anguish as of one giving birth to her first child, the cry of the daughter of Zion gasping for breath, stretching out her hands, "Woe is me! I am fainting before murderers."

"I will take up weeping and wailing for the mountains, and a lamentation for the pastures of the wilderness, because they are laid waste so that no one passes through, and the lowing of cattle is not heard; both the birds of the air and the beasts have fled and are gone.

I will scatter them among the nations whom neither they nor their fathers have known, and I will send the sword after them, until I have consumed them."

Therefore the land mourns, and all who dwell in it languish, and also the beasts of the field and the birds of the heavens, and even the fish of the sea are taken away.

Be ashamed,[2] O tillers of the soil; wail, O vinedressers, for the wheat and the barley, because the harvest of the field has perished.

Consecrate a fast; call a solemn assembly. Gather the elders and all the inhabitants of the land to the house of the LORD your God, and cry out to the LORD.

Alas for the day! For the day of the LORD is near, and as destruction from the Almighty[3] it comes.

Lament like a virgin[1] wearing sackcloth for the bridegroom of her youth.

"Hear, and testify against the house of Jacob," declares the Lord GOD, the God of hosts,

and I will send you into exile beyond Damascus," says the LORD, whose name is the God of hosts.

I will turn your feasts into mourning and all your songs into lamentation; I will bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head; I will make it like the mourning for an only son and the end of it like a bitter day.

The songs of the temple[2] shall become wailings[3] in that day," declares the Lord GOD. "So many dead bodies!" "They are thrown everywhere!" "Silence!"

For this I will lament and wail; I will go stripped and naked; I will make lamentation like the jackals, and mourning like the ostriches.

In that day they shall take up a taunt song against you and moan bitterly, and say, "We are utterly ruined; he changes the portion of my people; how he removes it from me! To an apostate he allots our fields."

They will stand far off, in fear of her torment, and say, "Alas! Alas! You great city, you mighty city, Babylon! For in a single hour your judgment has come."

And they threw dust on their heads as they wept and mourned, crying out, "Alas, alas, for the great city where all who had ships at sea grew rich by her wealth! For in a single hour she has been laid waste.
