as the high priest and the whole council of elders can bear me witness. From them I received letters to the brothers, and I journeyed toward Damascus to take those also who were there and bring them in bonds to Jerusalem to be punished.

When day came, the assembly of the elders of the people gathered together, both chief priests and scribes. And they led him away to their council, and they said,

In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) and said,

"Brothers, sons of the family of Abraham, and those among you who fear God, to us has been sent the message of this salvation.

"Brothers, I may say to you with confidence about the patriarch David that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is with us to this day.

"Brothers and fathers, hear the defense that I now make before you."

And looking intently at the council, Paul said, "Brothers, I have lived my life before God in all good conscience up to this day."

Now when Paul perceived that one part were Sadducees and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, "Brothers, I am a Pharisee, a son of Pharisees. It is with respect to the hope and the resurrection of the dead that I am on trial."

And I did so in Jerusalem. I not only locked up many of the saints in prison after receiving authority from the chief priests, but when they were put to death I cast my vote against them.

And I punished them often in all the synagogues and tried to make them blaspheme, and in raging fury against them I persecuted them even to foreign cities.

"In this connection I journeyed to Damascus with the authority and commission of the chief priests.

After three days he called together the local leaders of the Jews, and when they had gathered, he said to them, "Brothers, though I had done nothing against our people or the customs of our fathers, yet I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.

And they said to him, "We have received no letters from Judea about you, and none of the brothers coming here has reported or spoken any evil about you.

"And now, brothers, I know that you acted in ignorance, as did also your rulers.

On the next day their rulers and elders and scribes gathered together in Jerusalem,

And when they heard this, they entered the temple at daybreak and began to teach. Now when the high priest came, and those who were with him, they called together the council and all the senate of Israel and sent to the prison to have them brought.

And here he has authority from the chief priests to bind all who call on your name."

For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it.

as to zeal, a persecutor of the church; as to righteousness, under the law[3] blameless.

Do not neglect the gift you have, which was given you by prophecy when the council of elders laid their hands on you.
