And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, "The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel." For the LORD had ordained[4] to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, so that the LORD might bring harm upon Absalom.

Then he said, "Your name shall no longer be called Jacob, but Israel,[5] for you have striven with God and with men, and have prevailed."

And it was told David, "Ahithophel is among the conspirators with Absalom." And David said, "O LORD, please turn the counsel of Ahithophel into foolishness."

But if you return to the city and say to Absalom, 'I will be your servant, O king; as I have been your father's servant in time past, so now I will be your servant,' then you will defeat for me the counsel of Ahithophel.

Now in those days the counsel that Ahithophel gave was as if one consulted the word of God; so was all the counsel of Ahithophel esteemed, both by David and by Absalom.

So the king did not listen to the people, for it was a turn of affairs brought about by God that the LORD might fulfill his word, which he spoke by Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam the son of Nebat.

But he abandoned the counsel that the old men gave him, and took counsel with the young men who had grown up with him and stood before him.

But as he was speaking, the king said to him, "Have we made you a royal counselor? Stop! Why should you be struck down?" So the prophet stopped, but said, "I know that God has determined to destroy you, because you have done this and have not listened to my counsel."

When our enemies heard that it was known to us and that God had frustrated their plan, we all returned to the wall, each to his work.

Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will stand.

No wisdom, no understanding, no counsel can avail against the LORD.

Take counsel together, but it will come to nothing; speak a word, but it will not stand, for God is with us.[5]

For it was the LORD's doing to harden their hearts that they should come against Israel in battle, in order that they should be devoted to destruction and should receive no mercy but be destroyed, just as the LORD commanded Moses.
