For if these qualities[6] are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger.

As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfruitful.

And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the marketplace,

And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing. And he said to them, 'Why do you stand here idle all day?'

But his master answered him, 'You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sowed and gather where I scattered no seed?

And this is eternal life, that they know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

But I know that you do not have the love of God within you.

Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit,[7] serve the Lord.

Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you? -- unless indeed you fail to meet the test!

for in a severe test of affliction, their abundance of joy and their extreme poverty have overflowed in a wealth of generosity on their part.

But as you excel in everything -- in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in all earnestness, and in our love for you[2] -- see that you excel in this act of grace also.

while they long for you and pray for you, because of the surpassing grace of God upon you.

And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment,

Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus,[1]

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ

so as to walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing to him, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God.

rooted and built up in him and established in the faith, just as you were taught, abounding in thanksgiving.

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.

and may the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, as we do for you,

Finally, then, brothers,[1] we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to live[2] and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more.

We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers,[1] as is right, because your faith is growing abundantly, and the love of every one of you for one another is increasing.

Besides that, they learn to be idlers, going about from house to house, and not only idlers, but also gossips and busybodies, saying what they should not.

And let our people learn to devote themselves to good works, so as to help cases of urgent need, and not be unfruitful.

and I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective for the full knowledge of every good thing that is in us for the sake of Christ.[1]

so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

May grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord.

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to[3] his own glory and excellence,[4]

For if, after they have escaped the defilements of the world through the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they are again entangled in them and overcome, the last state has become worse for them than the first.

But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.
