Then the LORD said to Moses, "Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you, and the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day, that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not.

So give proof before the churches of your love and of our boasting about you to these men.

who fed you in the wilderness with manna that your fathers did not know, that he might humble you and test you, to do you good in the end.

And you shall remember the whole way that the LORD your God has led you these forty years in the wilderness, that he might humble you, testing you to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not.

Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling,

But you know Timothy's[3] proven worth, how as a son[4] with a father he has served with me in the gospel.

If anyone does not obey what we say in this letter, take note of that person, and have nothing to do with him, that he may be ashamed.

Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.
