A man is commended according to his good sense, but one of twisted mind is despised.

Every way of a man is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the heart.

Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.

Whoever thus serves Christ is acceptable to God and approved by men.

Greet Apelles, who is approved in Christ. Greet those who belong to the family of Aristobulus.

But a Jew is one inwardly, and circumcision is a matter of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter. His praise is not from man but from God.

for there must be factions among you in order that those who are genuine among you may be recognized.

Therefore do not pronounce judgment before the time, before the Lord comes, who will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Then each one will receive his commendation from God.

Not that we dare to classify or compare ourselves with some of those who are commending themselves. But when they measure themselves by one another and compare themselves with one another, they are without understanding.

But we pray to God that you may not do wrong -- not that we may appear to have met the test, but that you may do what is right, though we may seem to have failed.

Are we beginning to commend ourselves again? Or do we need, as some do, letters of recommendation to you, or from you?

We are not commending ourselves to you again but giving you cause to boast about us, so that you may be able to answer those who boast about outward appearance and not about what is in the heart.

but as servants of God we commend ourselves in every way: by great endurance, in afflictions, hardships, calamities,

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved,[2] a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

so that the tested genuineness of your faith -- more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire -- may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
