1 Samuel 4:1

And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines. They encamped at Ebenezer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek.

In the spring, Ben-hadad mustered the Syrians and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

And the rest fled into the city of Aphek, and the wall fell upon 27,000 men who were left. Ben-hadad also fled and entered an inner chamber in the city.

Gebal and Ammon and Amalek, Philistia with the inhabitants of Tyre;

"You are standing today all of you before the LORD your God: the heads of your tribes,[4] your elders, and your officers, all the men of Israel,

the king of Aphek, one; the king of Lasharon, one;

in the south, all the land of the Canaanites, and Mearah that belongs to the Sidonians, to Aphek, to the boundary of the Amorites,

Janim, Beth-tappuah, Aphekah,

Ummah, Aphek and Rehob -- twenty-two cities with their villages.

But today you have rejected your God, who saves you from all your calamities and your distresses, and you have said to him, 'Set a king over us.' Now therefore present yourselves before the LORD by your tribes and by your thousands."

Now the Philistines had gathered all their forces at Aphek. And the Israelites were encamped by the spring that is in Jezreel.

Then the LORD said to Samuel, "Behold, I am about to do a thing in Israel at which the two ears of everyone who hears it will tingle.

The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who killed about four thousand men on the field of battle.

When the Philistines captured the ark of God, they brought it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen[1] and called its name Ebenezer;[2] for he said, "Till now the LORD has helped us."
