Then Saul took three thousand chosen men out of all Israel and went to seek David and his men in front of the Wildgoats' Rocks.

He said, "The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,

"Do you know when the mountain goats give birth? Do you observe the calving of the does?

The high mountains are for the wild goats; the rocks are a refuge for the rock badgers.

When their judges are thrown over the cliff,[1] then they shall hear my words, for they are pleasant.

The wicked watches for the righteous and seeks to put him to death.

Those who seek my life lay their snares; those who seek my hurt speak of ruin and meditate treachery all day long.

Saul chose three thousand men of Israel. Two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. The rest of the people he sent home, every man to his tent.

So Saul returned from pursuing after David and went against the Philistines. Therefore that place was called the Rock of Escape.[1]

So Saul arose and went down to the wilderness of Ziph with three thousand chosen men of Israel to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph.
