And he gave a sign the same day, saying, "This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: 'Behold, the altar shall be torn down, and the ashes that are on it shall be poured out.' "
He who brought the news answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great defeat among the people. Your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured."
The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep his[3] eyes out to grieve his heart, and all the descendants[4] of your house shall die by the sword of men.[5]
And she named the child Ichabod, saying, "The glory has departed[1] from Israel!" because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
