So the king called the Gibeonites and spoke to them. Now the Gibeonites were not of the people of Israel but of the remnant of the Amorites. Although the people of Israel had sworn to spare them, Saul had sought to strike them down in his zeal for the people of Israel and Judah.

the king sent and summoned Shimei and said to him, "Did I not make you swear by the LORD and solemnly warn you, saying, 'Know for certain that on the day you go out and go to any place whatever, you shall die'? And you said to me, 'What you say is good; I will obey.'

The king also said to Shimei, "You know in your own heart all the harm that you did to David my father. So the LORD will bring back your harm on your own head.

The hand of God was also on Judah to give them one heart to do what the king and the princes commanded by the word of the LORD.

I say:[1] Keep the king's command, because of God's oath to him.[2]

Therefore one must be in subjection, not only to avoid God's wrath but also for the sake of conscience.
