Wherefore didst thou flee secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth and with songs, with tabret and with harp;

then will I cut off Israel out of the land which I have given them; and this house, which I have hallowed for my name, will I cast out of my sight; and Israel shall be a proverb and a byword among all peoples:

I am as one that is a laughing-stock to his neighbour, A man that called upon God, and he answered him: The just, the perfect man is a laughing-stock.

Surely there are mockers with me, And mine eye abideth in their provocation.

They abhor me, they stand aloof from me, And spare not to spit in my face.

And now I am become their song, Yea, I am a byword unto them.

Thou makest us a byword among the nations, A shaking of the head among the peoples.

All the day long is my dishonour before me, And the shame of my face hath covered me,

When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a proverb unto them.

And the harp and the lute, the tabret and the pipe, and wine, are in their feasts: but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither have they considered the operation of his hands.

And the LORD said unto Moses, If her father had but spit in her face, should she not be ashamed seven days? let her be shut up without the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.
