but the seventh year you shall let it rest and lie fallow, that the poor of your people may eat; and what they leave the wild beasts may eat. You shall do likewise with your vineyard, and with your olive orchard.

and if the peoples of the land bring in wares or any grain on the sabbath day to sell, we will not buy from them on the sabbath or on a holy day; and we will forego the crops of the seventh year and the exaction of every debt.

We also lay upon ourselves the obligation to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God:

“For six years you shall sow your land and gather in its yield;

“Six days you shall do your work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; that your ox and your ass may have rest, and the son of your bondmaid, and the alien, may be refreshed.

And if you say, ‘What shall we eat in the seventh year, if we may not sow or gather in our crop?’

When you sow in the eighth year, you will be eating old produce; until the ninth year, when its produce comes in, you shall eat the old.

Moreover you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards. Will you put out the eyes of these men? We will not come up.”

For the poor will never cease out of the land; therefore I command you, You shall open wide your hand to your brother, to the needy and to the poor, in the land.
