I opened to my beloved, but my beloved had turned and gone. My soul failed me when he spoke. I sought him, but found him not; I called him, but he gave no answer.

I slept, but my heart was awake. Hark! my beloved is knocking. “Open to me, my sister, my love, my dove, my perfect one; for my head is wet with dew, my locks with the drops of the night.”

My beloved put his hand to the latch, and my heart was thrilled within me.

Whither has your beloved gone, O fairest among women? Whither has your beloved turned, that we may seek him with you?

You will say in that day: “I will give thanks to thee, O Lord, for though thou wast angry with me, thy anger turned away, and thou didst comfort me.

Why, when I came, was there no man? When I called, was there no one to answer? Is my hand shortened, that it cannot redeem? Or have I no power to deliver? Behold, by my rebuke I dry up the sea, I make the rivers a desert; their fish stink for lack of water, and die of thirst.

For I will not contend for ever, nor will I always be angry; for from me proceeds the spirit, and I have made the breath of life.

Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the ordinance of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments, they delight to draw near to God.

I will wait for the Lord, who is hiding his face from the house of Jacob, and I will hope in him.

though I call and cry for help, he shuts out my prayer;

I will return again to my place, until they acknowledge their guilt and seek my face, and in their distress they seek me, saying,

With their flocks and herds they shall go to seek the Lord, but they will not find him; he has withdrawn from them.

“As I called, and they would not hear, so they called, and I would not hear,” says the Lord of hosts,

And Peter remembered the saying of Jesus, “Before the cock crows, you will deny me three times.” And he went out and wept bitterly.

And immediately the cock crowed a second time. And Peter remembered how Jesus had said to him, “Before the cock crows twice, you will deny me three times.” And he broke down and wept.

Those whom I love, I reprove and chasten; so be zealous and repent.

And when Saul inquired of the Lord, the Lord did not answer him, either by dreams, or by Urim, or by prophets.
