I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,

to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles.

Then I said, “Ah Lord God! they are saying of me, ‘Is he not a maker of allegories?’ ”

And at the latter end of their rule, when the transgressors have reached their full measure, a king of bold countenance, one who understands riddles, shall arise.

With him I speak mouth to mouth, clearly, and not in dark speech; and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?”

And Balaam took up his discourse, and said, “From Aram Balak has brought me, the king of Moab from the eastern mountains: ‘Come, curse Jacob for me, and come, denounce Israel!’

This was to fulfil what was spoken by the prophet: “I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter what has been hidden since the foundation of the world.”

Therefore whatever you have said in the dark shall be heard in the light, and what you have whispered in private rooms shall be proclaimed upon the housetops.

Since we have such a hope, we are very bold,
