they provoked the Lord to anger with their doings, and a plague broke out among them.
Thus they became unclean by their acts, and played the harlot in their doings.
O Lord our God, thou didst answer them; thou wast a forgiving God to them, but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
Behold, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many devices.
So Israel yoked himself to Baal of Peor. And the anger of the Lord was kindled against Israel;
and went after the man of Israel into the inner room, and pierced both of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through her body. Thus the plague was stayed from the people of Israel.
Nevertheless those that died by the plague were twenty-four thousand.
We must not indulge in immorality as some of them did, and twenty-three thousand fell in a single day.
