When the sun rose, God appointed a sultry east wind, and the sun beat upon the head of Jonah so that he was faint; and he asked that he might die, and said, “It is better for me to die than to live.”

‘What a weariness this is,’ you say, and you sniff at me, says the Lord of hosts. You bring what has been taken by violence or is lame or sick, and this you bring as your offering! Shall I accept that from your hand? says the Lord.

You have said, ‘It is vain to serve God. What is the good of our keeping his charge or of walking as in mourning before the Lord of hosts?

And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder,

And when you see the south wind blowing, you say, ‘There will be scorching heat’; and it happens.

Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On the principle of works? No, but on the principle of faith.

since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of their faith and the uncircumcised through their faith.

To the present hour we hunger and thirst, we are ill-clad and buffeted and homeless,

that is, how the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body, and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.
