I have become the laughingstock of all peoples, the burden of their songs all day long.

For there our captors required of us songs, and our tormentors, mirth, saying, “Sing us one of the songs of Zion!”

Thou hast made us the taunt of our neighbors, the derision and scorn of those about us.

We have become a taunt to our neighbors, mocked and derided by those round about us.

O Lord, thou hast deceived me, and I was deceived; thou art stronger than I, and thou hast prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all the day; every one mocks me.

Was not Israel a derision to you? Was he found among thieves, that whenever you spoke of him you wagged your head?

Behold their sitting and their rising; I am the burden of their songs.
