And Joshua made peace with them, and made a covenant with them, to let them live; and the leaders of the congregation swore to them.

When Adoni-zedek king of Jerusalem heard how Joshua had taken Ai, and had utterly destroyed it, doing to Ai and its king as he had done to Jericho and its king, and how the inhabitants of Gibeon had made peace with Israel and were among them,

for they are demonic spirits, performing signs, who go abroad to the kings of the whole world, to assemble them for battle on the great day of God the Almighty.

They are surprised that you do not now join them in the same wild profligacy, and they abuse you;

Unfaithful creatures! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.

Indeed all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,

crying out, “Men of Israel, help! This is the man who is teaching men everywhere against the people and the law and this place; moreover he also brought Greeks into the temple, and he has defiled this holy place.”

If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Then Jesus told his disciples, “If any man would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.

Then the five kings of the Amorites, the king of Jerusalem, the king of Hebron, the king of Jarmuth, the king of Lachish, and the king of Eglon, gathered their forces, and went up with all their armies and encamped against Gibeon, and made war against it.
