“I have said this to you in figures; the hour is coming when I shall no longer speak to you in figures but tell you plainly of the Father.

I will incline my ear to a proverb; I will solve my riddle to the music of the lyre.

I will open my mouth in a parable; I will utter dark sayings from of old,

to understand a proverb and a figure, the words of the wise and their riddles.

Then I said, “Ah Lord God! they are saying of me, ‘Is he not a maker of allegories?’ ”

And he said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How then will you understand all the parables?

he did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples he explained everything.

And he said this plainly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

So the Jews gathered round him and said to him, “How long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us plainly.”

This figure Jesus used with them, but they did not understand what he was saying to them.

“I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.

They will put you out of the synagogues; indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he is offering service to God.

The hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, every man to his home, and will leave me alone; yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.

We have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways; we refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
