because it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb, nor hide trouble from my eyes.

Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should suck?

Let them be like the snail which dissolves into slime, like the untimely birth that never sees the sun.

Upon thee I have leaned from my birth; thou art he who took me from my mother's womb. My praise is continually of thee.

And I thought the dead who are already dead more fortunate than the living who are still alive;

but better than both is he who has not yet been, and has not seen the evil deeds that are done under the sun.

If a man begets a hundred children, and lives many years, so that the days of his years are many, but he does not enjoy life's good things, and also has no burial, I say that an untimely birth is better off than he.

moreover it has not seen the sun or known anything; yet it finds rest rather than he.

“Hearken to me, O house of Jacob, all the remnant of the house of Israel, who have been borne by me from your birth, carried from the womb;

Woe is me, my mother, that you bore me, a man of strife and contention to the whole land! I have not lent, nor have I borrowed, yet all of them curse me.

because he did not kill me in the womb; so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb for ever great.

Give them, O Lord— what wilt thou give? Give them a miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
