And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red pottage, for I am famished!” (Therefore his name was called Edom. )

Once when Jacob was boiling pottage, Esau came in from the field, and he was famished.

Jacob said, “First sell me your birthright.”

And Jacob sent messengers before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom,

instructing them, “Thus you shall say to my lord Esau: Thus says your servant Jacob, ‘I have sojourned with Laban, and stayed until now;

These are the descendants of Esau (that is, Edom).

These are the sons of Esau (that is, Edom), and these are their chiefs.

“You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother; you shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were a sojourner in his land.
