The man who is the most tender and delicately bred among you will grudge food to his brother, to the wife of his bosom, and to the last of the children who remain to him;

but the poor man had nothing but one little ewe lamb, which he had bought. And he brought it up, and it grew up with him and with his children; it used to eat of his morsel, and drink from his cup, and lie in his bosom, and it was like a daughter to him.

As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear him.

Do not eat the bread of a man who is stingy; do not desire his delicacies;

A miserly man hastens after wealth, and does not know that want will come upon him.

“Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should have no compassion on the son of her womb? Even these may forget, yet I will not forget you.

Put no trust in a neighbor, have no confidence in a friend; guard the doors of your mouth from her who lies in your bosom;

Why then did you go out? To see a man clothed in soft raiment? Behold, those who wear soft raiment are in kings' houses.

Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’

Take heed lest there be a base thought in your heart, and you say, ‘The seventh year, the year of release is near,’ and your eye be hostile to your poor brother, and you give him nothing, and he cry to the Lord against you, and it be sin in you.

And you shall eat the offspring of your own body, the flesh of your sons and daughters, whom the Lord your God has given you, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemies shall distress you.

so that he will not give to any of them any of the flesh of his children whom he is eating, because he has nothing left him, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in all your towns.
