Thus says the Lord: “For three transgressions of Edom, and for four, I will not revoke the punishment; because he pursued his brother with the sword, and cast off all pity, and his anger tore perpetually, and he kept his wrath for ever.

For the Edomites had again invaded and defeated Judah, and carried away captives.

If Edom says, “We are shattered but we will rebuild the ruins,” the Lord of hosts says, “They may build, but I will tear down, till they are called the wicked country, the people with whom the Lord is angry for ever.”

“Egypt shall become a desolation and Edom a desolate wilderness, for the violence done to the people of Judah, because they have shed innocent blood in their land.

Remember, O Lord, against the Edomites the day of Jerusalem, how they said, “Raze it, raze it! Down to its foundations!”

Who is a God like thee, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance? He does not retain his anger for ever because he delights in steadfast love.

Be not quick to anger, for anger lodges in the bosom of fools.

“You shall not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother; you shall not abhor an Egyptian, because you were a sojourner in his land.

Therefore be imitators of God, as beloved children.

“I have loved you,” says the Lord. But you say, “How hast thou loved us?” “Is not Esau Jacob's brother?” says the Lord. “Yet I have loved Jacob

For I will not contend for ever, nor will I always be angry; for from me proceeds the spirit, and I have made the breath of life.

Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? Wilt thou prolong thy anger to all generations?

And I am very angry with the nations that are at ease; for while I was angry but a little they furthered the disaster.

And now behold, the men of Ammon and Moab and Mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade when they came from the land of Egypt, and whom they avoided and did not destroy—

behold, they reward us by coming to drive us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit.

Israel has spurned the good; the enemy shall pursue him.
